Orphists

1912 to 1920's

This style of painting is related to Cubism and is sometimes called Orphic Cubism. The style is more abstract and colorful than other forms of cubism, using intersecting planes of bright colors. The name was givin by poet Guillaume Apollinaire (French, 1880-1913), referring to Orpheus, the singer and poet of Greek mythology. Artists include Robert Delaunay and his wife, Sonia Delaunay Terk, Fernand Lger, Francis Picabia, Marcel Duchamp, and Frantisek Kupka,. One of the hallmarks of this style is the explorative use of color and music theories to create abstract color harmonies divorced from representations of objects.
