Notes:  French artist Paul Signac was an early proponent of pointillism. Combining the figural and the abstract, he sets the profile of Feneon, an art dealer, critic, and political activist, against a swirling kaleidoscopic background. The sitter’s unconventional personality is brilliantly and spiritedly brought to life in this depiction. A similar playfulness informs the full title of the work, Opus 217. Against the Enamel of a Background Rhythmic with Beats and Angles, Tones, and Tints, Portrait of M. Félix Fénéon in 1890, which is both a parody on scientific terminology and an indication of the artist’s interest in color theory.
