Fauvism grew out of Pointillism and general Post-Impressionism, but is characterized by a more primitive and less naturalistic style, particularly in the use of color to express feeling rather than to record appearance. The name Fauves, French for “wild beasts,” was given to these artists because of their violent, uncontrolled use of intense colors. Paul Gauguin's style and his use of color were especially strong influences. The artists most closely associated with Fauvism are Henri Matisse, Albert Marquet, André Derain, and Maurice de Vlaminck. Fauvism was a short-lived movement, but had a substantial influence on some of the Expressionists.
