Christine Poggi, "In Defiance of Painting":
"In papiers colles such as Still Life BACH of 1912, the colored woodgrain
wallpaper, limited to a few simple fragments, opposes the comparatively more
ethereal, fading lines of charcoal drawing. One can still detect the remnants of
traditional perspectival diminution and modeling in the scaffolding of charcoal
drawing, but the Renaissance system of representation now appears in a state of
disarray. Arbitrarily fragmented contours and contradictory areas of modeling
no longer form a coherent or rationalized view of nature."
